High school students had a fun time playing the role of surgeons during Urology Week 2010 in Germany. Held during the annual congress of the German Association of Urology (DGU) in Düsseldorf last September, students from age 15 were introduced to the world of urology. Basic urological procedures were explained using simulators. The students performed sewing and knotting exercises, explored the inside of a red bell pepper using a cystoscope, observed ultrasound procedures and trained with laparoscopic devices. Around 120 pupils from Düsseldorf took part and several national and local TV stations and newspapers covered the event.
The iconic square in central Amsterdam formed the backdrop for Urology Week hosted by members of the Dutch Urological Association (DUA). Curious passers-by examined the giant-size model of a prostate displayed on 15 September right near the Dam Square were several DUA and EAU members were present to answer queries. Participating Dutch urologists obtained insights on public perception and opinions regarding prostate cancer and other urological diseases.

For Urology Week, Brussels’ iconic Manneken Pis had a ‘medical make-over,’ this time in a surgeon’s gown. The well-known Manneken Pis is one of the city’s biggest tourist crowd drawers and often undergoes various changes depending on commemorative events held in the Belgian capital.
