The EAU organises Urology Week with two objectives in mind - to draw attention to the fight against urological conditions and create awareness about urology as a medical specialty. Can you contribute to these objectives? Do you have an interesting idea or a creative solution? Do you have good ties with the local media or patient groups? Start planning an event or a campaign in your city or region – be part of Urology Week 2012!
This year, we are focusing our efforts on creating awareness for prostate conditions, a topic that is still either a taboo or a mystery to most of those who are in the risk group. Prostate conditions -both benign and malignant diseases- affect many men after their 50s and the majority of those who are approaching their 70th birthday will experience some symptoms related to these conditions.
Prostate cancer is one such disease that calls for much attention – it is the most frequently diagnosed form of cancer in men accounting for 24.1% of all cases and 10.4% of cancer deaths. Not only is this a life-threatening disease, but also a condition that severely affects the quality of life of both the patient and his partner. This is where awareness campaigns, educational and support programmes can be of great benefit. Explore this website to find out how to organise such an event or be part of one!
“Did you say ‘Neurology’?” – You have probably heard this more than once during your professional life as a urology professional. Urology Week is a great opportunity to be loud and clear about our specialty – one of the oldest in medical history!
On a serious note, awareness about urology as a specialty is important, because it creates understanding for what urologists do, what conditions they treat and that there is always a doctor that men and women can go to, when they have “embarrassing” symptoms.
